What we collect, and how we use it.
Worth Crossing measures how its issues, site and ads are read. We never sell your email address.
Who we are
Worth Crossing is an independent weekly magazine, published on this site and by email. Write to news@ajay.to about anything on this page.
When you subscribe
We ask for your email address and your permission to send one Kansas City issue a week. You are not an active subscriber until you confirm through a link we email you. If signup is ever closed, the signup page says so and does not collect an address. We keep your email address, the version of the consent you gave, and the times you signed up, confirmed, unsubscribed or bounced. We do not ask for your name, postal address or date of birth.
When we email you
Mail goes out through MXroute, the provider that hosts our mailbox, so your address passes through its servers. For each email we send we keep a delivery record: which issue or confirmation it was, when we sent it, its message ID, and whether it bounced. If your mail server reports that an address does not exist, we stop sending to it.
- Opens. Each issue carries a small image. When your mail app loads it, we record that your copy was opened, when, and how many times. The request also carries technical details, such as your IP address and mail app. Some mail apps load images on their own, so an open is not proof that you read it.
- Clicks. Links in an issue, other than the unsubscribe link, pass through our own address on the way to where they point. We record which link was followed and when, tied to your copy of the issue. Some mail apps and security scanners follow links on their own, so a recorded click is not proof that you clicked.
When you use the site
- Analytics. We run our own analytics service. It records the pages you view, with their full addresses including any query string; where you came from; your device, browser and screen; your IP address and an approximate location worked out from it; an identifier that recognizes the same device on later visits; how you scroll and move through a page; the buttons and links you click, including links to other sites; your interactions with form fields; text you copy from a page; and recordings of visits, with what you type into forms masked. It also records errors and loading times. We keep these records indefinitely, except recordings of visits, which we keep for 30 days.
- Ad clicks. A paid placement on the site links through our own address, so we can count its clicks.
- Server records. We keep records of requests, errors and timings to run and secure the site. We keep email addresses and subscription links out of them.
- Your reading list. Saving stories uses this browser’s local storage, not an account. Saved titles and links stay on your device, where anyone else using this browser may see them. “Clear saved stories” removes them.
- Cookies. The site sets the cookies its forms need, and our analytics uses its own identifier to recognize your device from visit to visit. You can limit all of this with your browser’s privacy settings and content blockers, and limit opens by not loading images in your mail app.
How we use it
We use it to send the issue and run the site; to learn what readers read, open and click, and to improve what we publish; to sell advertising, and to show advertisers and prospective advertisers how their placements and Worth Crossing perform; to keep the site and the mailing list secure and working; to meet our legal obligations; and for other purposes connected with running and growing the publication.
Who sees it
We share information with the companies that help us run Worth Crossing, such as our email provider and our hosting and network providers, so they can do that work for us. Advertisers see counts and results, never your email address or a list of readers. We may disclose information when the law requires it, to protect Worth Crossing or its readers, or to a successor if the publication is sold or merged. We never sell your email address, and we never turn public records into marketing lists.
How long we keep it
We keep it for as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires.
Leaving
Every issue carries an unsubscribe link. Opening it shows a confirmation page; choosing unsubscribe stops future issues. Mail apps that offer their own unsubscribe button use the same link, in one step. We keep a minimal subscription record so we remember that choice, and we keep the delivery, open and click records from issues we already sent you. Someone typing your address into a form will never resubscribe you. To ask what we hold about you, or to have it deleted, write to news@ajay.to.
Children
Worth Crossing is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
We may change this policy. The date below shows which version is in force.
Policy version: October 5, 2026. The version of October 4, 2026 said we used no email tracking pixels and no site analytics; that was true while it was in force.
