You can read a house by its trim or by what it was for. At 720 North Fourth Street in Kansas City, Kansas, the Strawberry Hill Museum’s history rewards the second reading.

The museum says John and Margaret Scroggs decided to build the house in 1887, and its account describes decorative glass, crafted woodwork and tiled fireplaces. That suggests an ambitious family home.

The same history records the sale of the property in 1919 to become St. John’s Orphanage, and later changes in its care work. It dates the museum’s beginnings to 1988, when the Strawberry Hill Ethnic Cultural Society acquired the property.

That is the design story: a family home that became a place of care, then a museum. We have not toured the interiors, assessed accessibility or checked the museum’s dates against other records. The visitor page carries conflicting seasonal messages, so October visiting arrangements are unconfirmed; our web note lays them out.
